Willow groaned as she woke. Not because she was sore, but because her first thought was of the face of her grandmother.

Grandmother. That woman looked like no grandmother she had ever met. She looked like a queen, fit and pampered, dripping in jewelry. Her eyes held no warmth, no kind sparkle. Instead they had been dark and unfriendly, hateful. So why did she want Willow so badly?

Groaning again she rubbed at her eyes before opening them and looking around the room. For a moment she panicked, not remembering where she was until she saw the vampire asleep in a chair across from the bed.

It was dark except for the small bedside lamp. No windows meant she couldn’t tell what time of day it was. She looked down at her watch and bit back a curse. The screen was busted beyond repair, and she was certain the company wouldn’t be offering any replacements. So much for telling the time, keeping track of her emails, or exercise.

It must still be day if the vampire was sleeping. Though she wasn’t sure for how much longer.

Flexing her toes, she was relieved to find that they didn’t hurt. Peeking under blankets she realized Cavan had removed her shoes and socks, but was even more relieved to see that the bruising from the paralyzing spell was gone. If not for the big vampire, she wouldn’t have made it out of there.

Thinking of Cavan, she sat up and looked at him. His head was tilted to the side, leaning against the wall, his hands folded in his lap. His face was calm, unlike the tight expression he’d worn when the coven had shown up, or the lustful look he’d had as she drank his blood.

She raised a hand to her lips as remembered the taste. It had been like nothing she’d expected. In fact, she’d expected to gag and possibly throw up. Human bodies weren’t made for drinking blood. And yet… and yet none of those things had happened. Instead something strange had settled over her as if it was the most normal thing in the world. He tasted like… wine. Old, rich wine that had been aged to perfection.

It had warmed her inside and out, and to her surprise it excited her so much that her panties had been wet despite the pain. It had excited him too, to the point where his eyes had gone black and his fangs descended. She shivered at the thought, but not out of fear.

She licked her lips as she remembered the taste of him and how his heart had stuttered when she bit his wrist… Wait a minute. His heart had stuttered? Vampires didn’t have a heartbeat. They didn’t have a pulse for that matter either. Had she been confused?

No. She had felt it deep down in her bones. She had felt it in the way her heart had answered his.

Swinging her legs over the bed, she tested her leg and smiled. It felt like new. She stood up and stumbled forward.
